Suleyman or Suleiman I is one of the most celebrated Sultans of the Ottoman Empire. He controlled the Empire for more than 4 decades, close to 5 decades and was the 10th sultan of the Empire. His major contribution to the Empire is the fantastic legal and administrative system that was to be followed for centuries later.
Ottoman Empire and Suleyman
Suleyman was a distinct personality not only in the Ottoman Empire but elsewhere in history because of his ability control the triad - the civil, military and economy of the country. Suleyman was a brave soldier, an able economist and an ideal administrator. If you go into the legal restructuring the Suleyman ordered and implemented - it is something that is rare and perhaps unique to administrative history of regions.
He led the Ottomans to one victory after another until he strode most of south central Europe with some of his conquests towards Western Europe. The worthy mentions being Belgrade, Rhodes and almost all of Hungary! The Siege of Vienna in the year 1529 checked his rise as a conqueror of all regions. Be it the Persian Gulf, the Red sea or the Mediterranean, his influence stretched to all these regions and beyond.
Coupled by the rise and growth of the Empire, a major part of which was facilitated by Suleyman, his notable achievements are in the field of:
1. Law, especially criminal law
2. Education
3. Taxation Policies
4. Social order
He devised the word 'Kanun' that literally meant law - fixed the helm of affairs for the legitimate and legal transfer of power from sultan to sultan for the centuries to come. Education and culture deeply fascinated Suleyman as he himself was a great goldsmith and an equally gifted poet as well. He therefore allowed cultural and literary pursuits to flourish over decades and ensured that it continued even after his death.
He rightly understood that if the Empire had to progress the way it was doing, it had to imbibe the best of all cultures and filter out the bad parts of the same. The Golden Age recognized in the history of the Ottoman Empire was therefore during his reign as the ultimate Monarch of the Ottoman Empire.
The Ottoman Empire Suleyman did not see reason in following some tradition that had no base and defying such laws he married a Harem girl who would rise to become even more powerful than the Sultan himself for a brief time.
