Ottoman Empire Facts

1. Like most of the Empires which are recorded in history, the source from where the Ottoman Empire evolved is also not known to the scholars. In spite of spending years researching about their origin, scholars are unable to state the origin of one of the most powerful Empires of the world. Apart from this there are quite a few facts about the Ottoman Empire which are generally not heard of.
2. Ancient nomadic tribes along the western side of Eurasian prairies were the sowed the first seeds of the Ottoman Empire.
3. The Ottoman Empire was an imperial power that existed from 1299 to 1923 and is considered to be one of the largest empires to rule the borders of the Mediterranean Sea which lasted for as many as 634 years.
4. In the late 1200s A.D. a group of Turks who called themselves the 'Ottoman Turks' after Osman, one of their first rulers, began to build an empire in Eastern Europe.
5. In the year 1243, the Mongols were the first tribes to have invaded Asia Minor and destroyed the Seljuks which gave the Ottoman Empire ample scope to grow.
6. 'Rum' was the ancient Seljuk Sultanate which was known as 'The Ceasers of Rome' in Arabic.
7. The early pagan Turks worshipped the 'Elements of Nature' out of which one was the Earth.
8. The early Turks were similar to the Mongolian tribe which was an ancient barbaric tribe.
9. The Ottoman Turks basically were followers of Islam. However, the people or the countries which they conquered practiced a wide variety of religious beliefs, like Christianity, Judaism, apart from the worship of a number of gods and spirits. Hence, in order to keep peace, the Ottoman Turks allowed their subjects to worship in whatever manner they choose though those who did not practice Islam, were required to pay the government an additional tax.
10. The eastern border of the Ottoman Empire consisted of another empire known as the Persian Empire. This region had been a part of the earlier Islamic Empire but got separated due to religious disagreements. The people of the Persian Empire were practicing Shiite Muslims, while the much of the rest of the Islam world were Sunni Muslims.
11. Around the 15th and the 16th century, the Ottoman Empire included a large area of land in Europe, Asia, and Africa. The center of the empire was none other than the country of Turkey.
12. By 1600 A.D. the Ottoman Empire had reached the peak of its glory and Istanbul was among the most prosperous and beautiful cities on Earth.
